My favorite project. It stops traffic, literally.
In a city designed for distraction and denial, the Bellagio Fountains cause people to pause, to be present, and to be in awe. This is a gift.
Working with systems integrators, Signal Perfection Limited, I helped design and commission the control and sound systems for the 26 million gallon water feature.
Created by WET Design the fountains were impressive from the first spray. Steve Wynn taught me that was just a starting point.
Steve knew the fountains could do much more than move, so he invited award-winning choreographer Kenny Ortega to bring them to life. Kenny made the water dance.
This experience remains the most powerful demonstration of the synergy of technological innovation and human inspiration I’ve seen. So many events and performances rely on bells and whistles to deliver the Wow factor. The fountains elegantly deliver goosebumps.
The fountains complement the main attraction, the casino and hotel inside the building, rather than compete with it. Not only do the fountains complement the Bellagio, they add value to every adjacent property. Paris Las Vegas has two restaurants which enjoy commanding views of the fountains, and every room facing the Strip in Bally’s, Paris, and the Aladdin benefits.
Sharing is having more. Steve has gambled, and won, on this bet repeatedly. So has the whole city.
I want to acknowledge Wyatt DeFrietas, Steve Wynn’s development director for entertainment attractions. Wyatt led a team of very talented designers, engineers, and builders and taught me to hold people accountable for their very best level of performance, and to reward and appreciate them when they deliver.
